Kristoffer Reitan (tbd on pronunciation) wins the Truist Championship. LIV still exists.
The Truist Championship
Kristoffer Reitan wins the Truist Championship by a couple of strokes over Rickie Fowler (!!!) and one of the Højgaard brothers. Reitan earned PGA Tour status through the DP World Tour pathway after winning twice last season. Over the past few weeks, Reitan has been knocking on the door and absolutely blasted through it on the back nine at the Truist.
What this means is that the European Ryder Cup team seems to have acquired two more potential Ryder Cup picks in Reitan and Alex Fitzpatrick. The Europeans seem to have a stranglehold on professional golf right now outside of Scottie Scheffler and Cam Young. Yes, we might have two of the best players in the world, but the Ryder Cup is about team depth and how deep the teams can be. We look to be on track for a historically large loss in Ireland in 2027.
I like to call balls and strikes on myself when I miss, and earlier this week I said that I didn’t want my majors at Quail Hollow Club, and I somewhat stand by that take. Although, I will admit that it provided a pretty stout test today, and the Green Mile is a great set of finishing holes. I think Quail Hollow needs to make a decision: are you a regular signature-event venue or a full-time major venue? If it’s the latter, they need to take themselves off the regular PGA Tour calendar. I would equate Quail Hollow to Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio.
Myrtle Beach Classic
Brandt Snedeker wins the Myrtle Beach Classic! (Checks calendar to make sure it’s not 2012.)
It’s unbelievable that the U.S. team competition captains keep selecting captains who are still trying to play competitive golf. If I see any discourse about Brandt Snedeker being on the Presidents Cup team, I am going to freak out.
Brandt made a run at the Valspar Championship this year but ran out of steam at the end. I honestly didn’t see this coming, but all credit to Brandt for winning when it feels like the game has left behind players like him.
If you are as old as me, you probably remember when Brandt was an absolute menace on the greens and made everything he looked at with an old Odyssey Rossie putter. Brandt probably hits it no farther than 280 off the tee, and for someone to win on the PGA Tour with that kind of distance today is a testament to the other parts of his game.
LIV Virginia
There was a ton of talk this week at LIV Virginia, where the players basically split into two camps:
“I would like to play on the PGA Tour again at some point in the future.”
“I will never play on the PGA Tour again because LIV is better.”
It’s the second point I really want to hit on. What they are really saying is: “I am not good enough to do what I would need to do to re-qualify for the PGA Tour, and I am mad that the PIF pulled funding. Now I am going to have to play the Asian Tour for the rest of my career making very little money.”
There was also a golf tournament where someone won, but at this point no one really cares.
Quick Notes
Someone named Lucas Herbert won the LIV event.
Bryson DeChambeau might go full-time YouTube golf.
Jon Rahm might be the biggest loser in the entire LIV situation. Career = ruined.
Bettinardi is releasing a version of Matt Fitzpatrick’s Bettinardi putter.
PSA: Unfortunately, we will have to survive another PGA Championship week of Blockie content. If you don’t engage, he might disappear one day.
Rankings!
Bryson back to good
Jon Rahm removed from good
